What’s the Plan?

Are you a planner? If so, to what extent? Do you like to have every little detail mapped out, or do you prefer a broad structure in life where the details can be filled in later?

Or perhaps you would rather there were no plan whatsoever? In writing-land, this is commonly referred to as a pantser.

I am a pantser.

But as much as a pantser approach has a lot going for it, it has led to a lot of procrastination and no book releases since 2016. So here I am, dipping my toe into the murky waters of commitment. This is a plan…

Today (ish): Assassin’s Paradox

In the world of Godslost, Sword of Destiny becomes the prequel to the Darkening of Godslost series. So logically the next book released is the first book in that series, right? Wrong! The next book to be written is set about 150 years earlier and is itself a prequel to the Breaking of Godslost series. Sorry about that…

Soon (ish): Queen’s Descent

Hot on the heels of the prequel is Book 1 (unconventional, I know). The hope is that this is released for sale later this year, but it’ll be shared with the email community much sooner than that, so be sure to sign up and get your chance at an exclusive copy.

And just to break the randomness completely, Queen’s Descent will be followed by books 2 and 3 in same series with the very tentative titles:

• Queen’s Debt (currently in final draft)
• Queen’s Destiny (not yet written – hope to write in November)

Release of these two will probably be next year, but as ever, the email community will get a first sniff.

Later (ish): Other Books

This is where is starts to get a bit shaky. Planning the rest of the year is daunting enough, but beyond that? Good lord – that’s alien. So instead of providing anything that looks remotely like a plan, I’ll offer up my “to write list” instead:

1. Jumping around a bit, an expansion novel for Dusk is Coming;
2. The Magic of Godslost series – an eight part series explaining where the magic of Godslost has gone; and
3. Two early prequels to the Breaking of Godslost series that tell us a little more about the Empire and the Emperor – just because it’ll be fun.

The eagle eyed of you will have noticed that the Darkening of Godslost (i.e. the series to which Sword of Destiny will be a prequel) is not even on this rather paper-thin plan. Well, there’s a bit of a reason for that.

I’ve been trying to write for about twenty years now, and the story I really want to tell is the Darkening. And I don’t want to bugger it up. Therefore, I’m holding off writing it just a little while until I (hopefully) have my eye in. Sorry about that. But hopefully you’ll appreciate the delay when it does come, and in the meantime, there’s a load of stuff landing (he says).
